For North American users, please be aware that "Tenancies" are known as "Leases" and "Terms & Breaks" within a Tenancy are referred to as "Terms & Options". For more information on regional terminology, please refer to our Glossary of Regional Terminology.
This article is your step-by-step guide to cancelling the current term of a lease/tenancy, thereby bringing it to an end. Cancelling a term is the most straightforward method to terminate an agreement before its scheduled end date. We'll ensure you confidently navigate this process with ease.
Starting the Cancellation Process
There are two ways to start the cancellation process:
- Select the Lease/Tenancy that you wish to cancel.
- Click on Terms & Breaks tan from the left menu.
- Click the Contextual Menu [...] and select Cancel Term.
Alternatively,
- Head to the Dashboard Calendar and click on the reminder for the term expiry or renewal.
- Choose Cancel Current Term.
Confirming the Cancellation
Upon initiating the cancellation, you will be met with a confirmation screen. Here’s what to do next:
- Ensure that you are cancelling the correct term by reviewing the details.
- If applicable, select Remove From All Direct On-Charge Templates to prevent this term from being applied in the future.
- Click on Cancel this Term to finalize the cancellation.
The lease/tenancy will now be listed under the Cancelled tab on the Lease/Tenancy page. Note that you will still have the option to edit it if needed.
Post-Cancellation Considerations
Following the cancellation:
- Automatic rent invoices will no longer be produced for the cancelled term, however, you still have the ability to manually raise income invoices as you see fit.
- Review any repeating income invoices that may be set up, as these will need to be addressed separately.
Important: Keep in mind that cancelling a term is not the same as vacating a term. If you foresee the lease/tenant leaving or you require final rent calculations, consider using the Vacate Current Term option instead. You can learn more about this alternative in our guide on vacating a term.
Restoring a Cancelled Term
There may come a time when you need to restore a term that was previously cancelled. Whether the cancellation was made in error or circumstances have changed, restoring a cancelled lease/tenancy term is a simple process.
- Select the appropriate Lease/Tenancy and navigate to the Terms & Breaks tab.
- Find and click on the link for the cancelled term you wish to restore.
- Click the Restore Cancelled Term button.
Upon completing these steps, the system will reactivate the cancelled term. The lease/tenancy will be shifted out of the Cancelled section and placed back into the Current or Expired section, depending on its status.
Restoring a cancelled term should be done with caution to ensure that it aligns with the current status of the lease/tenancy agreement and that all involved parties are informed of this change.
